Junior Chess Event – 6th December 2014

JUNIOR CHESS EVENT: 6 December 2014

John Hipshon, who runs junior chess at county level, organises 3 one-day congresses a year: York, Leeds, Sheffield. Ecclesall Junior School has become his chosen venue for the South Yorkshire leg of this trio.

Last Saturday over sixty keen young chess players enjoyed a well-run day’s play in the school hall, the dining room being used for parents, refreshments and knockabout chess between rounds.

Ecclesall junior School was well represented, as were Silverdale, Totley All Saints and Mylnhurst where I also run chess clubs.

Special mention should be made of Fraser and Cameron Wilson who courageously entered a more senior section knowing it would be tougher, sacrificing an almost certain chance of winning at the lower level.

My thanks go especially to Christine and Luke Wilson who saw to the catering, and to caretaker Peter Mooney and Rachel for the setting up.

Our next event is the EPSCA qualifying day on Saturday, 24 January, 2015, in preparation for the Pontins weekend in June, invitations for which are going out now.
